Laptop Power Socket Repair
Specialists
For many people the first time they
require laptop repair is when the power socket/dc
socket or power input socket fails on their laptop. Whatever
you know it as, it’s, usually, the round hole with a centre
pin, normally situated on the side or sometimes at the back
of the laptop; and is where the power adaptor connects for
external power and recharging the battery. In all power
socket / dc socket / dc jack failures the laptop will be
completely stripped down replace or re-solder the power
socket / dc socket / dc jack and re-assemble, this usually
takes between 2-3 hours.
The first signs are that the battery
will not charge or the centre pin may appear loose. The good
news is that nearly all laptop power socket/dc socket /dc
jack problems can be resolved. We repair on average
20-30 laptops with dc socket issues a week.
Fundamentally, through the power socket /dc socket / dc
jack comes all the power needed for the laptop to
function, it is soldered onto the motherboard and from there
power is distributed around the laptop for the various
components to perform their tasks.
The power socket /dc socket /dc jack
can be disturbed from its connection through a number of
actions. The most common is when people trip over the
power adaptor lead, this pulls the power socket /dc
socket / dc jack away from the motherboard. Depending on
the severity of the break it maybe possible to clean the
break and re-solder the original power socket /dc socket
/ dc jack back in place. If the power socket / dc
socket / dc jack has sustained physical damage a new
power socket / dc socket / dc jack will be re-soldered
onto the motherboard.
Other reasons why a power socket
may fail is a "dry" or cracked solder joint, where the
connection has come away from the motherboard. Our
electronic engineers will first have to identify the suspect
joint and re-solder to a fix. It may be found that some
tracks on the motherboard have blown and need to be
repaired.
The fault, however, may not be the
power socket / dc socket / dc jack at all, but at the
other end, so to speak. The power adaptor can also
stop working; one of the first things our engineers will
check is that there is the correct voltage output is
consistent with the manufacturers’ guidelines. If the output
is inconsistent either the cable may have a break, a diode
or capacitor may have blown or the end adaptor may have been
damaged. Whatever the reason we will find an answer.
The centre pin has a tendency to bend
or break under undue external pressure normally we would
replace the power socket / dc socket / dc jack.
However, sometimes finding an exact replica power socket
/ dc socket/ dc jack can prove difficult, especially if
the laptop is more than 4 or 5 years old. In such cases we
engineer the replacement centre pin.
